In any case of persistent shoulder pain where active and thorough local treatment fails to alleviate symptoms, an investigation of surrounding structures should be made. Many roentgenological clinics routinely fluoroscope the chest in all cases of shoulder pain and, when suggestive pathology is found, roentgenographic studies are made of the chest. The finding of a calcified bursa in an elderly individual may at times mask the true cause of shoulder pain. A calcified bursa is not infrequently asymptomatic.
