In children, particularly in boys, between the ages of seven and one-half and seventeen years, the occurrence of painful heels should suggest the possibility of epiphysitis of the os calcis. The roentgenographic findings are characteristic,—fragmentation , rarefaction, narrowing, and irregularity in outline of the epiphysis, with later excessive calcification. The condition is self-limiting, and recovery occurs spontaneously when the epiphyses unite at about the age of seventeen years The etiology has not been definitely established, but the role of trauma seems to be of some significance.
