Abstract

Four cases of lumbar pain caused by stress fractures of the lower (floating) ribs due to violent muscle exertion are presented. The diagnosis should be suspected from the history and clinical findings and is confirmed by follow-up roentgenograms. It is suggested that this type of stress fracture is a distinct clinical entity encountered in persons with well developed muscles who are involved in heavy work.
