Abstract

Because of the high incidence of penicillin-resistant staphylococcal infections, acute hematogenous osteomyelitis can result in a large number of complications. On the basis of the study presented, it is our opinion that only bactericidal antibiotics should be used early in the treatment of acute hematogenous osteomyelitis and, conversely, that bacteriostatic drugs have no place in the early treatment of this condition.

Penicillin is the best antibiotic for penicillin-sensitive staphylococci.

To date, methicillin (Staphcillin) appears to be the best antibiotic for penicillin-resistant staphylococci.
