There is a condition, usually seen in the heels of young women, for which the tern pump bumps has been coined. Although this is usually a painless callosity that requires no treatment, in some heels it is a painful bursitis that can be relieved only by surgery if the patient is to wear regular shoes. Twenty-one patients with forty heels treated by resection of the posterior prominence of the calcaneus were relieved of their symptoms and able to wear any type of shoe. The only complication were paresthesias in one foot, the result of division of a sensory nerve, and one recurrence of symptoms caused by failure to remove enough bone. Follow-up, averaging 3.9 years and ranging from twenty-one years to thirteen months, indicated that long-lasting satisfactory results may be anticipated when the procedure is performed properly.
