Abstract

A method of thumb reconstruction in teenagers with the thumb metacarpal intact, using gradual distraction of the stump tissues after osteotomy of the metacarpal, is described. The advantage of the procedure is that the soft tissues covering the thumb are not disturbed thus preserving its sensibility. This method may be used when the thumb metacarpal is available and the skin is in good condition.

An alternative procedure when the skin of the stump end is in poor condition is also briefly described.
