Abstract

A case of Candida infection of the knee successfully treated with 5-fluorocytosine is reported. 5-fluorocytosine is a new oral antifungal agent with minimum side effects as compared with amphotericin B, which is currently the drug of choice for severe fungal infections.

Although simple and safe to administer, the use of 5-fluorocytosine requires expert laboratory support with a capability for 5-fluorocytosine assay, broth dilution procedures, and valid species identification.

The pharmacology and clinical application of 5-fluorocytosine are discussed in detail.
