Total release of the hamstrings from their origin was performed in thirty children. In the twenty-five who were available for review (fifty knees), the spastic knee-flexion deformity was corrected adequately; in most instances the crouch posture was corrected, gait was improved, and a longer stride was possible. However, increased lumbar lordosis developed in four and genu recurvatum, in seven. Total proximal release is, therefore, no longer recommended.
