Abstract

In twenty-four arthroplasties of the knee in twenty patients the Shiers knee-hinge prosthesis was used. These patients were followed for an average of thirty-three months after operation. Five patients who had been totally confined to a wheelchair prior to surgery were able to walk postoperatively, and ambulation improved in all patients. Pain was relieved in eighteen of twenty patients. Complications occurred in eight of twenty patients.
