High tibial osteotomy is one of the surgical options for the treatment of osteoarthritis of the medial compartment of the knee or varus malalignment of the knee. The procedure has been associated with a high success rate when appropriate correction of the femorotibial angle has been obtained in a properly selected patient1-4. Patients who were younger than fifty years of age had a joint survival rate of 80% in a ten-year follow-up study that included ninety-four lateral closing-wedge osteotomies and twelve dome osteotomies5. In another long-term study, excellent or good ten-year results were obtained in 70% of fifty-one knees in which a lateral closing-wedge osteotomy had been performed6.
