Question: Does ibuprofen relieve symptoms in children with transient
synovitis of the hip?Design: Randomized (allocation concealed), blinded (clinicians,
patients, and outcome assessors), controlled trial with follow-up to 7 days or
to symptom resolution.Setting: Pediatric emergency department (ED) of a children's
hospital in Melbourne, Australia.Patients: 40 patients presenting to the ED with a clinical diagnosis
of transient synovitis of the hip. Exclusion criteria were an age of <12
months or >12 years, symptom duration of >1 week, fever of >38°C,
white blood-cell count of >15 × 109 cells/L, erythrocyte
sedimentation rate of >25 mm/h, pathology seen on hip radiographs or known
hip pathology, need for hospital admission, or contraindication to ibuprofen.
Of the 40 patients initially enrolled, 36 (90%) (mean age, 6 yr; 81% boys)
were included in the
analysis.
