Instructions for CME Activities
There are two types of CME Activities for which you may claim AMA PRA Category 1 Creditâ„¢.
- Quarterly CME Activities consist of reading the articles published in The Journal of Bone & Joint Surgery in the previous three months and successfully completing the post-activity examination of 50 questions of interest to the general orthopaedic surgeon. Quarterly CME examinations are published in April, July, October, and January and can be taken online or a printed version may be downloaded from the website. The American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons designates this educational activity for a maximum of 10 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™. Physicians should only claim credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.
- Subspecialty CME Activities consist of reading the articles cited in the post-activity examination of eight questions each in individual subspecialties. The American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons designates this educational activity for a maximum of 4 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™. Physicians should only claim credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.

The Quarterly CME and the post-activity examination may be completed for Continuing Medical Education credit or for practice and general review. To benefit most from this educational experience and qualify for CME credit, please observe the following instructions:
- Read the Purpose Statement and be certain that these purposes meet your individual learning needs.
- These CME questions have been derived from the articles published in preceding six issues (three months) of the American Volume of The Journal of Bone & Joint Surgery. A careful study of each article must be conducted before you respond to the questions.
- Read each question carefully and identify the best answer.
- Fellows of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons should provide their AAOS membership number in the designated area if they want the Academy to document their participation in this CME activity.
- In addition to providing the answers to the CME questions, you must complete the evaluation questions. The way you answer these evaluation questions will not in any way affect the score that you achieve.
- In order to qualify for CME credit, you must correctly answer more than 50% of the post-activity examination questions. You must complete all the questions before submitting for scoring and feedback. If you cannot answer all 50 questions at one sitting, you may save the examination online and return to it when convenient. You will learn your results immediately after submission. If you have achieved a passing grade, you will be able to see the preferred answers for each question and you can easily link to a highlighted section of the text where the preferred answer is justified. If you have not received a passing grade, you will be asked to continue to answer the questions until the examination is successfully completed. As long as the post-activity examination has not expired (at the end of the quarter), you can continue to take it until you achieve your goal. Your CME award certification is available for download as soon as you pass.
